Cancer Full Moon Jan 15, 2014: Sustainability

"You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself."  Nelson Mandela

“The difference between what we are doing and what we are capable of doing would solve most of the world’s problems.”  Mahatma Gandhi

Last week, most of North America and Northern Europe felt the intensity of winter in no uncertain terms. "Polar Vortex" became a household word literally overnight in the United States. Extreme cold, snow, and ice brought structured life to a standstill.

Hundreds of millions of people were impacted directly or indirectly by this intense winter weather. Extreme, harsh weather on this scale is beyond comprehension. In a matter of a few days, this brute natural force literally shook the very pillars of life's 4 foundational anchors - self-identity, home, career, and relationship. These are the very 4 areas of life now being activated by the powerful planetary cycle named "The Cardinal Cross of 2014". [Maybe the weather stations ought to start naming storms after planetary cycles? ;) ]

Consider for a moment how a natural phenomena rapidly and unpredictably changed individual choices, economic and commercial flow, family and community interactions, and relationship connection time. This is a potent example of how the Cardinal Cross can express its energy through the consciousness.

And in the midst of these life altering events, we arrive at the 1st Full Moon of the new season, gracing our night sky on the 15th.  This Moon arrives at the fullness of its current lunation at 6:52 pm in Hawaii, 8:52 p on the West Coast, just before midnight on the East Coast, and continuing east, on the 16th for the rest of the world. (4:52 GMT) The zodiacal reference point is the sign of Cancer at 26°, an archetype for how
we nurture and sustain ourselves on a personal, family, and community level. For the millions affected by last week's storms, perhaps these Cancer themes take on added significance for the days ahead.

The Moon is the ruling energy of Cancer. This vibration is familiar ground in anyone's natal chart. It points to your deepest needs, how you emotionally respond to change or crisis, and the habits and patterns that create stability and security in your life. These particular traits become amplified whenever the Moon is either New or Full in its ruling sign.

Here's our latest Gemini Astrology Podcast update highlighting the vibrational essence of this Cancer Full Moon. Duration 4 minutes

The synopsis of this lunation is quite basic and telling: sustain and nurture yourself, your local environment and community. Add your creativity to the community mix (Kathryn signed up for a "poetry slam" next week at a local art gallery). Make healthy, life-giving choices. Be kind to your body. Eat organically. As Cancer is one of the 4 Cardinal signs, it implies something new wants to be birthed. Have you decided to nurture yourself differently in 2014? Expansive Jupiter in Cancer through mid-July is there to assist in your evolving shifts.

Here's the Full Moon chart

Most significant to the chart is a continuation of the strong Cardinal energies in place (red lines) since the beginning of the year. While the degree placements are not as tightly interwoven as the January 1 New Moon, the vibrational tone of the chart is nonetheless significant. In a sense, the two New Moons and one Full Moon of January serve as a hologram for the intense cardinal energy resident come late March through early June. Paying attention to shifts/changes this month in your personal life can be quite helpful for surfing the bigger waves come this Spring.

The other significant planetary pattern in this chart is the unfolding Venus retrograde and the eventual retrograde of Mars come March. These personal planet retrogrades in Cardinal signs point to strong individual opportunities in the coming months to literally redefine who you are, and your relationship to everything you encounter. Receiving bodywork, inner reflections, spiritual retreats etc. are potent allies during these cycles.

Venus continues her reversed motion through January 31 when she stations direct at almost 14° Capricorn, which is right next to transformative Pluto.  Leading up to this encounter with Pluto, Venus creates a direct square with Mars the day after the Full Moon. That connection brings relationship dynamics directly to center stage. Are you feeling nurtured by your relationship interactions? What changes are you ready to make to deepen your connection with those close to you? What old patterns are no longer essential for your well being and growth?

Significant dates to be aware of over the next 2 weeks:
16th Venus in Capricorn square Mars in Libra
19th Sun enters Aquarius - focus shifts to social justice and equality
22nd Mercury enters its February retrograde shadow at 18° Aquarius (retro begins Feb 6)
28th Moon, Venus, Pluto in Capricorn oppose Jupiter in Cancer, square Uranus in Aries (intense energy)
30th Aquarius New Moon
31st Venus stations direct, conjunct Pluto, oppose Jupiter
31st Beginning of the Chinese year of the wooden horse.

Conclusion:
Cardinal Cross 2014
design by Joseph Mina
Recently, a client asked me if she should curtail her travels in 2014 due to the anticipated intensity of the 2014 planetary cycles. My immediate response was "no". I explained to her that while these cycles are as intense as they get, that same energy provides considerable fuel for substantial changes in all walks of life around the globe.

Personally, I don't consider "riding out the storm" or sitting on the side lines an option. While it may seem prudent to play it safe, there is no growth, passion, or positive contribution to the Planet that occurs in this energy neutral state. This is a very powerful year for making substantiative changes in your life, and affecting the lives of those around you. This is especially true if you have strong Cardinal planetary placements in your natal chart between 8° and 16° degrees.

If you are presently experiencing strong changes, please share below in the comments section about the new opportunities offered you as these changes unfold and integrate in your life.

The opening quotes to this update are from 2 men who did not play it safe. While they no longer walk this Earth, their words and deeds live evermore in the annals of human evolution. May we all draw strength from that deep well of courage and opportunity in the days ahead. Sat Nam

  1. Aloha, I have a major affinity to the astrology occurring I was born January 1952. Grand Cross in Cardinal Signs. Going thru my Saturn Return recently has placed me on Maui with my daughter and her family during the Venus transit with the Sun. It has been a wild and very intense ride, yet thanks to all these wonderful forces, removing the old structures so real expansion and truth may reign in our lives. For me because I am fairly used to Grand Cross energy it is more about, getting caught in the hysterics of those around me and helping to triage and stabilize others so we can move into our new conciousness. I very much appreciate your view on these times. Mahalo
