Sagittarius New Moon December 2: Honoring The Inner Teacher

Sagittarius New Moon occurs in Hawaii on Dec 2nd at 2:22:22 PM!
(4:22 Pacific, 7:22 Eastern, and on the 3rd in Western Europe 12:22a UTC, east to the International Date Line)

It is the weekend after Thanksgiving. The good news: things are starting to lighten up from the intensity of November and the Mercury Retrograde. Last month was full of serious Scorpio energy near the north node destiny point. Fortunately, now with Sun in fiery Sagittarius through December 21, there is a more optimistic outlook on the road ahead.  Mercury moves through Sagittarius December 4 - 24 to uplift thought forms and motivate a lighter mood. Enjoy and optimize this time! The first few weeks of December offers an opportunity to get moving on projects before a long series of personal planet retrograde cycles commences on the coming Solstice through May 2014.

December New Moon at 11° Sagittarius is an invitation to explore the question of what is the truth.  What do I believe and what is right?  Sun and Moon in Sagittarius create a tight square to Chiron, the healing point, in Pisces. This square injects a deeper sense of compassion into Sagittarius’ otherwise strong directed energy. It indicates a greater depth of expanding vision to be of service to others. The glyph for Sagittarius is the arrow, a reminder and reflection to aim high. Set your sights higher; focus on a
bigger vision for the world.

Here's the Sagittarius New Moon chart:

More Sagittarian themes include: writing, teaching, publishing, traveling and outdoor adventuring. Learn something new! New Moons are the perfect time to set affirmations and energize your intentions for the month.

For a moment let’s explore the current placement of Jupiter, the planetary ruler for Sagittarius. As the largest planet in our solar system, Jupiter in the birth chart symbolically represents where “I feel expanded and how I experience blessings on my life path.” Jupiter in the sky story is now retrograde in Cancer from November 6 through March 6, 2014. This is an invitation on the collective level to reassess how we nurture ourselves. The unfolding affordable health care debate in the US is a strong example of reconsidering how we take care of each other in society, as well as how communities support each other.

Last weekend, Joseph and I were invited by our friend into her Hula community to witness a special ceremony in her initiation process of becoming Kumu, a Master Hula teacher.  While she has formerly received a MA degree in dance, she has recently dedicated many years to train with teachers in Hawaii and teaching hula in her community. What a blessing it was to witness her and others participate in the next step of study and practice as Kumu Hula in the Hawaiian tradition.  As a witness to the ceremony,  I could only barely imagine the hours of dedication it took behind the scenes to learn how to respectfully and traditionally honor the Hawaiian Gods, Goddess and long lineage of teachers. This uplifting event perfectly personified the Sagittarian spirit of spiritual depth, focus and integrity.

The December New Moon in Sagittarius also offers opportunities to honor the spiritual teacher within.  Look at your life, to your own teachers and guides, and recognize how they have helped you and supported you on your path. How have you integrated their teachings in your life now? How do you serve as a leader to teach and share your wisdom with others? What do you really believe and where do you currently focus your energy and attention?

This lunation astronomically occurs near Antares, the heart of the Scorpion. Antares, known as the rival of Mars, is one of the four royal star of Persia. This stellar placement for the December New Moon brings added emphasis of power, passion and focus.

Mars in Libra

Speaking of passion and focus, Mars enters Libra on December 7th, and remains in Libra through July 25, 2014. Mars transits Libra for over seven months due to the 2014 Mars retrograde from March 1 - May 19. Planet placements the last week of December especially motivates changes in the area of relationship and family. Be extra mindful and compassionate during this holiday season balancing family traditions, relationships with authority and asserting individuated needs with diplomacy.

Mars generally is about asserting energy and it is not so comfortable in the sign of Libra, since Libra likes comfort, harmony and sweetness. Mars in Libra wants to get things right and seeks consensus, so moving forward requires extra diplomacy. “Thought before action” is a theme this holiday season and the turn of the year.  Can you assert your needs with diplomacy and tact; create consensus without compromise? These themes resurface again during the first half of 2014.

As 2013 comes to a close, Venus the goddess of love and beauty begins her retrograde cycle on the Solstice day, December 21, 2013 through January 31, 2014. More details on Venus retrograde, Solstice and Gemini Full Moon on December 16 in our next update.
