Astrology 2012 Year of the Dragon: Dream BIG

"I have heard it said that the first ingredient of success - the earliest spark in the dreaming youth - is this: dream a great dream." John Alan Appleman, Lawyer and Poet (1912-1982)

"If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less but to dream more, to dream all the time." Marcel Proust, Novelist (1871-1922)

Yes, 2012 is finally here, driven by much fanfare in the “P” realms of perspective, projection and of course “prediction”. While I’ll leave the projection and prediction to others, I like to offer some perspective for the astrological year ahead. But first, a brief look back at 2011.

“Critical tension” perhaps best defines 2011. That’s the tension building internally (think "volcano") before something erupts, releases or gives birth. Examples of CT were powerfully vivid in the revolutionary fervor of Middle Eastern and Occupy Movements, the emergence in the US of the Tea Party, intensification of political polarization world-wide, and financial retrenchment in many countries. This social activity was further fueled and magnified by the rapidly expanding social networks, and instant videos of news events by ordinary people. Yes, people are feeling the juice of Uranus in Aries.

On an even bigger stage, the natural world showed us the true meaning of power with "once in a century" floods and droughts, strong earthquake activity, including a 9.1 shake that literally moved Japan 12 feet (4 metres) eastward, and 4 feet (1.25m) lower, and massive tsunami waves related to the Japan earthquake that touched every part of the Pacific Ocean rim. Behind this intensity lies solar activity. The Sun is now moving towards solar maximum in its current cycle with stronger solar eruptions forecast for 2012 into 2013. This portends strong solar energy affecting the entire solar system, and hence, further amplifying an already amplified field.

2011 also significantly expanded our perspective of the Cosmos. For example,

scientist began to image/observe our Sun in ways never before imagined. Satellites brought us HD, 3D and full sphere images of our day star. Further, this was a record year for planetary exploration and discovery within and outside of our solar system. Current count for extra-solar planets now exceeds 2,000 new worlds. Meanwhile, deep space probes and large Earth telescopes revealed wonders of the Universe never before seen. Hard to imagine that just 230 years ago our ability to see went no farther than Saturn. Quite a contrast to today's observation of events billions of light years from Earth recorded across the light spectrum. Seems the Universe is priming our psyches and hearts for greater mysteries from "beyond the beyond".

This tension and expanded awareness now fuels the realms of creativity and social change as we move into 2012.

From the Chinese perspective, we soon enter the year of the Yang Water Dragon (January 23). Dragons are creatures of passionate creation. Also, the element of water feeds the wood element, which implies creative growth. What opportunities await you this year? How will you passionately and creatively choose to serve the greater good of humanity?

Astrologically, the biggest waves arriving are also quite different in intention and scope.

At the Yang side of the scale, there’s Uranus square Pluto continuing to create upheaval and meltdowns around the planet. The old ways no longer work. Something new wants to be birthed. 2012 has 2 exact squares of these dynamic archetypes in store during June thru September, with 5 more squares to follow through 2015. Yes, more labor contractions are in the offing. Yet, while much focus is being directed to December 21, 2012 as the “end of the world”, Uranus/Pluto reminds us there’s more to dissolve and birth beyond that anticipated date with destiny.

On the Yin side of the scale, watery, dreamy Neptune moves back to its home sign of Pisces in early February, remaining in this visionary realm until 2026-27. Historical records of Neptune/Pisces suggest a huge wave of renewed spirituality, imagery, music and deeper connection to the natural elements await us over the next 16 years or so. "Dream BIG" says Neptune. Dream as you have never dreamed before. See and imagine a world of grace, creative expression and harmonious flow.

2012 also brings us 3 Mercury Retrogrades in March, July and November. The winged messenger shows its influence in all areas involving thought, movement and communication. In retrograde periods, these logically structured realms move into a more creative, spontaneous, serendipitous flow, inviting us to see and experience life differently. This vibration also alters how we interact with each other, creating critical tension and potential for connection to more magical realities.

Solar and Lunar Eclipse energy is less intense in 2012 compared to 2011. This year sees 2 Solar eclipses (Annular and Total) and 2 partial Lunar eclipses compared to 6 eclipses in 2011. Also, a very rare and epic eclipse of Venus' transiting the Sun on June 5th follows the previous day's partial lunar eclipse. Eclipse energy brings us into the shadow element, revealing aspects of our psyches ready to transform.

A super Full Moon occurs on May 5th (6th in the Eastern Hemisphere) just as the Moon in Scorpio makes its closest (perigee) approach to Earth for 2012. At a distance of approximately 356,400 km, a very large Moon will grace the sky. Given the Moon's effect on our emotional state, this Scorpio driven amplification ought to be a highly energized emotional event, especially since expansive Jupiter conjoins the Sun in Taurus.

Other significant cycles in 2012 await us too. Future articles will focus specifically on the coming Mars in Virgo (1/23) and Venus in Gemini (5/15) retrogrades; Jupiter and Saturn’s final pass through Taurus and Libra, respectively; and more in-depth understanding of Neptune in Pisces, and Uranus in Aries square Pluto in Capricorn.

As I have shared in this and other forums, the current planetary cycles are each significant. That they occur concurrently points to an unusually potent time of reevaluation, deeper understanding, courage, and greater service to humanity.

In 1969, the Moody Blues released the album  “On a Threshold of a Dream”. The final lines from the song “The Dream” seem quite telling for the Neptunian time now emerging in the consciousness of the human race.

“...as new life will come from death
Love will come at leisure
Love of love, love of life
And giving without measure
Gives in return a wondrous yearn
Of a promise almost seen
Live hand-in-hand
And together we'll stand
On the threshold of a dream....".

Those words by Graeme Edge were written at the end of a 4 year Uranus conjunct Pluto cycle in Virgo, and just before Neptune moved into visionary Sagittarius. Then, intense turmoil from the mid to late 60's brought huge changes in our day-to-day rituals, human interactions and beliefs. Now 1/4 of a Neptune cycle or 42 years later, human kind stands at a similar point of time, yet more technologically advanced, greater access to creative resources, seemingly more consciously aware of the greater world around and beyond the Earth, more socially connected, potentially more awakened to serve humanities highest good, and more than ever ready for something new to emerge.

2012 may prove to be a year unlike any other. However, our conscious choices as a human race will dictate the depth and quality of change we experience in the year ahead. The inner and outer critical tension patterns building since Pluto entered Capricorn in early 2008 provide us with potent catalytic fuel for transformative global shifts. Yet, "how humanity steps forward" to embrace such huge changes remains for the moment a significant Uranian wild card in this ever evolving cosmic dance.

Borrowing words from test pilot extraordinaire Chuck Yeager just prior to his breaking the sound barrier for the first time: now is the time to access and use that inner fuel...now is the time to "throttle up" into 2012 and beyond.
