Virgo Full Moon - Awakening the Dreamtime

"The longer I have lived and the more knowledge I have got from the achievements of people, the narrower and smaller the world of knowledge have appeared to me. And it has become more clear to me that even we are ruled by the forces beyond our knowledge."
Toivo Pekkanen, Finnish writer

"I always wondered why somebody doesn't do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody."  Lily Tomlin, humorist

On February 28th, the Moon comes into direct opposition with the Sun at 6:38 am, Hawaiian Standard Time (8:38 am PST; 11:38 EST; 4:38 pm GMT). This is the last Full Moon of the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere.

The actual Full Moon window begins some 16 hours earlier on February 27th as the Moon enters Virgo, and continues 16 hours beyond Full Moon, when the Moon reaches 20 degrees Virgo. This 20 degree span represents the orb influence the Full Moon exerts on our psyches and body vibration during the Full Moon Window. It also explains why the Moon appears "full" for more than one night.

This is the 2nd of 5 consecutive Super Full Moons, as the Moon reaches its direct opposition with the Sun just 19 hours past its perigee point, or closest point to the Earth. This "syzygy" effect puts the Sun/Earth/Moon in direct alignment with each other. This tight line-up, amplifies the Full Moon's pull on the Earth's fluid tides, which incidentally includes the body fluids of all living organisms, including us!

Also, as with all Full Moons, the solar wind effect on the Earth's magnetic field creates a magnetic "tail" sweeping away from the Earth. The Full Moon passes through the tail's field of highly charged particles about 3 days before Full Moon and exits 3 days later. Having a highly charged Moon surface explains in part why Full Moon's can feel intense. That "syzygy" occurs at the same time adds an additional jolt to a very potent lunation. "Lunatics" start your cosmic engines.

Here's the chart for this Full Moon lunation:

Short story: the strong representation of planetary energies in the signs of Aquarius and Pisces stand out in the Full Moon chart. This continues the Aquarius/Pisces theme initiated back in late January during the Leo Full Moon, and continued in mid-February during the Aquarius New Moon.

The dominant Piscean energy of Jupiter (expansive chi), Sun (intentional fuel), Venus (beauty and grace) and Uranus (with an odd twist) brings a heightened sensitivity (Pisces) to this lunation. The Moon's Virgo vibration (Earth element) grounds it into a workable form.

The energetic veils between the waking and ethereal state become very thin in this type of vibration. Remember, 2010 is the year of expanded sensitivity thanks to Jupiter's transit through the sign of the Fishes. That sensitivity applies not only to the emotional centers, but also to the psychic realm in this mystical lunation.

The Virgo Details:
From top to bottom, here are the members of this Aquarius/Pisces grouping:

In Aquarius: Neptune, Chiron, and Mercury
In Pisces: Jupiter, Sun, Venus and Uranus

Aquarius speaks in part to a desire for a higher social order; Pisces beckons a deeper commitment to service in the global community through humanitarianism. Merging these intentions underscores the significant shifts now taking place in societies world-wide as people learn how to adapt, function and co-exist in new ways.

This brings us to the Full Moon and the vibration of Virgo. The sign of the Vestal Virgin or Priestess directs its energy into life's details, patterns, rituals honoring those patterns, and the change of seasons. Virgo is a very exacting energy, striving for perfection and diligence in whatever endeavor one pursues.

That Mercury, ruling energy of Virgo, appears prominently in this chart in late Aquarius, accentuates the essence of communication during this Full Moon phase. Merged with Pisces' modern or higher octave ruler Neptune (vision), and Chiron (healing), the winged messenger provides the energy to clarify and communicate to others your vision for a healthier synthesis and quality of life in the world community.

It also activates a higher vibrational (Aquarius) dream state (Neptune) bringing new messages from the "beyond".  Pay attention to your dreams over the next few nights, or unusual, mystical occurrences. Actively work with the information using artistry (Venus) in the realm of images, dance, or creative crafts. This will help ground the otherwise very etheric Piscean vibe.

As Jupiter is the ancient ruler of Pisces (Neptune is the higher-octave or newer vibration of the sign of the fishes), an expanded optimism accompanies this Full Moon. Use Jupiter's extra energy to connect with a deeper aspect of Spirit, and/or your soul essence. Jupiter will soon appear in the eastern dawn sky bringing its optimistic energy into the month of March. For now,  use ritual (Virgo) at the Full Moon to open the door for more depth in the realm of the mystical and spiritual aspects of your life.

Venus and Uranus

The grace and elegance of Venus brings added beauty and creativity to Uranus, triggering spontaneous Uranian burst of insight and creative inspiration.

Venus makes a direct connection with Uranus on March 3rd.  In this Venus window, Uranus' offers a quick, changeable vibrational field for unforeseen, new paths and direction for your creative urges. Again, pay attention to burst of insight and mystical messages, dreams, etc.

As an aside, with each lunation now, Jupiter moves closer to Uranus.  Ultimately, they meet on June 8 and begin a series of 3 conjunctions through January 4, 2011. The archetype of Jupiter expands the energy field. When it expands the unpredictable, surprising, free-radical vibration of Uranus, all bets are off.  I'll focus on this potent combo and its potential in a future blog. However, here's one example of how this duo works together: their last meeting was in 1997 in the technology driven sign of Aquarius. Here, a very rapid acceleration of investing in internet start-up companies gave rise to what is now known as "the Dot.Com bubble".

Who's most directly affected by this lunation:
Anyone with significant aspects in
  • early degree (0 - 9) Mutable signs (Virgo, Pisces, Gemini, Sagittarius;
  • late degree (20 - 29) in Mutable, or Fixed signs (Taurus, Scorpio, Leo, Aquarius)
Fixed signs are found in the middle month of a season; Mutable signs are those occurring in the last or 3rd month of a season.

For the Fixed sign types, utilize this Aquarian energy through the gift of humanitarian service to others, and/or realigning with your life vision through ritual and creative projects.

Mutable types get to switch gears (they're good at either changing their minds, being indecisive, or not being satisfied with the task at hand - just ask any Pisces, Gemini, Virgo or Sagittarius type). This can translate into moving their creative energy in a brand new, unforeseen direction.

Saturn vs Pluto - the tension eases

In the background of this lunar vibe, Saturn in Libra (2) continues its contentious interaction with Pluto in Capricorn (1). This energy is now temporarily waning as retrograde Saturn moves farther away from last month's direct square with Pluto. Hence, an easing of critical tension in the realms of relationship and structure (including politics) is now occurring.

The recent Presidential Health Summit in Washington is one example. While nothing of substance occurred at the summit, easing of tensions is nonetheless evident by the very fact that such a hot-button meeting could actually happen at all.

In general, a little more breathing room ought to be available for sorting out relationship issues (Libra) within the context of how you organize/direct your life flow. Certainly a potent time of redefining exactly what your existing relationships mean to you, and whether they continue to align with your life direction and purpose.

Let's not forget about Mars

Mars at about 1 degree Leo has all but stopped its apparent motion in the sky as it nears the completion of its retrograde cycle and its March 10th direct motion date. Between now and April 3, Mars will have moved only 3 degrees of angle (in the same time frame it normally covers 20 degrees of angle).

Specific to this Moon vibration, Mars (1) creates a sextile or 60 degree angle with Saturn in Libra (2). In concert with the Saturn/Pluto vibration mentioned above, this retrograde vibration signals an inward time to reflect on what feels heartfelt or passionate to you, especially in association with relationships in your life. When Mars moves direct on March 10, the door opens to activate this inner reflection.

In a much broader sense, whenever Mars nears a retrograde or direct motion point, more agitation and unbalanced energy results due to the build up of unexpressed or pent-up energy. One example is the 8.8 magnitude Earthquake in Chile just yesterday, the strongest quake there since 1960. As of this writing, Tsunami warnings were issued throughout the Pacific Rim.

Another similar example of this building tension within the Earth's structure is the very strong earthquake that rocked Haiti in mid-January . Both are sobering reminders of our true status as "short-term guest" on this planet.

Also, the lack of productivity, or struggle to accomplish tasks one may experience in this cycle often becomes amplified at the retrograde or direct point.

For example, the current winter weather patterns affecting the Northern Hemisphere triggered by a weather phenomena known as El Nino  has had quite an impact on day-to-day life including productivity, efficiency and ease of flow. Colder climes have experienced record breaking snowfalls, rare ice/snow along the Gulf Coast, hurricane force winds, floods etc. Meanwhile, the more tropical locations have experienced cooler and/or drier than normal conditions (both are true for Hawaii). These adverse weather conditions have had a tremendous inhibiting impact on the normal, flow of energy in society. As Mars begins its direct motion later in March, this pent-up energy has the potential to become very disruptive, especially in late Spring and early Summer. The term "cabin fever release" may take on new meaning and intensity.

I'll revisit the Mars Retrograde in a blog next month. There, I'll focus on the retracing of its retrograde path and what to expect, as it begins its direct motion toward its start point at 20 degrees Leo. Retracing times are usually echoes or replays of events occurring during the retrograde period. My inner astrologer asks "is there any astro rest for the Mars weary???"  ;)

Personal reflections and information:

I return to the Denver/Boulder area in late March to offer private astrology sessions, an evening presentation about this Summer's Cardinal Climax, and attend a Healing Retreat. Details are now being sorted out. If you are interested in hosting me for a day or two in either the Boulder or Denver Metro area, please contact me.

Neptune, which rules images and photography, has had a major influence on my Jupiter in Aquarius, bringing new insight, inspiration and a higher spiritual connection. I've channeled this energy into my photographic endeavors. For those who may have missed this, I recently created a video from images I've taken in Hawaii. It's called Beauty  and Fury and may be found here. Recent images I took during my mainland travels may be found here - gallery requires a user name/password - User name = gallery; password = gallery1.

Conclusion:

I welcome your comments below about the information provided. Mahalo!

The Virgo Full Moon follows on the heels of mid-February's potent Aquarius New Moon. The profound Aquarius themes activated during that lunation are the seeds for this Full Moon's rituals, dream state downloads, and creative impulses. This is a potent preparatory time for the strong astrological waves of this Summer. Virgo requires attention to life's details. Creative urges, direction and dreams need a container for actualization. Now's the time to create or strengthen your personal container for what's to come.
