Aries New Moon - stepping into spontaneous change

"Times of general calamity and confusion create great minds. The purest ore is produced from the hottest furnace, and the brightest thunderbolt is elicited from the darkest storms." Charles Caleb Colton (1780 - 1832)

April 13th 2010 Solar Image from NASA Stereo Satellite
A lot has shifted significantly in the ethers since beginning to write earlier this week about Thursday's Aries New Moon. For example, strong volcanic eruptions in Iceland ground most airplanes flying in Europe. The strongest solar prominence/flare in the past 15 years erupts on the Sun just 3 days ago. Many other oddities fill the news. Each reminds us we live in extraordinary times, requiring extraordinary measures to surf this vibrational wave of change.

With that said, I present my perspective on this New Moon cycle we have just entered, plus reflect on the building Saturn/Uranus opposition taking place on the 26th. Oh...as if we needed one more thing, Mercury turns retrograde tomorrow (17th).

Aries New Moon: the Moon returned to its new position on the14th in the sign of Aries. New Moon is a time of resetting the vibration. This restart phase is further accentuated as this New Moon represents the first new lunation of the Spring season.

The archetype of Aries focuses on the "individuated self". Aries types rarely look back. Their life force and life intention is to explore new ground and boldly enter where others have feared to tread. Seemingly impulsive, irresponsible, selfish, impetuous and impatient (by that way, that's a good example of a strong Virgo perspective), Aries types are highly creative, imaginative, easily bored, solitary and amazingly fast. In part, this New Moon helps you attune to that part of your psyche fitting any or all of these characteristics. Let's call it an exploration of your "inner Aries".

This New Moon dynamic creates an expansive template for how to effect positive, dynamic change. This adds to similar themes established over the previous 4 Full Moon.

Here's the New Moon chart

What I find compelling about this New Moon chart is the powerful balancing/rebalancing act (see chart below) between:

Saturn in Virgo (1) attention to the details of the structure

                                               and

Sun and Moon in Aries (2) - intense fuel and fiery emotion
Uranus and Jupiter in Pisces (3) - quick change and dynamic expansion
Neptune and Chiron in Aquarius (4) - higher vision and inner healing

Notice how each of these components reside in the mid to late 20 degree range. Out of the 30 degrees of a sign, the 20's represent a higher vibration intention. That we have 7 planetary aspects hovering in that degree quadrant is quite a potent statement for raising vibration and energy within yourself and on this planet.

Further, notice how everything balances on Saturn in Virgo (1). As a foundational point of this geometry, Saturn runs the show, dictating the balancing effect of the other members. Their astrological themes include:

Aries - points to creating something new
Pisces - completion of something old
Aquarius - our evolving mythos in this new age.

Saturn represents the form, structure, or container in which we play out our earthly existence. In Virgo, it is quite the task master for getting things right and paying attention to details. This triangular geometry is referred to as a "Yod" or the finger of fate, or finger of God. It is a paradoxical joining of seemingly incompatible energies. While a true Yod has the fastest planetary aspect of the group at the apex (in this case that would be the Sun), I'm going to go Gemini here, bend the rules and call this a Yod. It's too compelling a dynamic to think of it in any other way.

The Yod works in this fashion - Sun/Moon in Aries (2) adds its creative energy to Neptune/Chiron in Aquarius (4) to "expand the margins" of how we shape and heal our vision for co-creating on Planet Earth. This information is conveyed to Saturn in Virgo (1) for grounding and activation purposes. In the middle of this configuration lies Uranus/Jupiter in Pisces (3). This pairing is truly the wild-cards of our current times. Uranus is out of the box and operates in the realm of spontaneity. Jupiter expands that effect. Combined, they add quite a bit of confusion and uncertainty to the mix. I view this dynamic as an activation point for taking a leap of faith into the unknown. Opposite Saturn, they are the Universe's counter-point to Saturn's logic and predictability. If you wonder why life is feeling topsy-turvy, look no further than the Saturn-Uranus opposition. Same if you are feeling an urgency or strong desire to experience something new and compelling.

Saturn-Uranus Opposition:
On April 7th, Saturn returned to Virgo after spending a little over 5 months in the sign of Libra. The moment Saturn moved back into Virgo was the moment it reactivated its opposition dynamic with Uranus: a life altering two-year cycle of change versus stability/structure, which occurs every 45 years. Evidenced by the contentious restlessness seen in the political and social spectrums, this cycle is changing many realities, and quite quickly. While Saturn requires stability, Uranus clamors for quick change.

Saturn/Uranus started building in the Summer of 2008 coming to its first exact opposition on election day. No wonder President Obama was elected under the banner "change we must".

Also, back in November 2008, Kathryn and I recorded an audio podcast show about Saturn-Uranus. You can listen to it here

This is the 4th of 5 oppositions (exact on April 26th) and the last in Virgo-Pisces. The 5th opposition occurs in Aries-Libra on July 26th. Expansive Jupiter is a strong component of both the 4th and 5th oppositions so expect this vibration to intensify considerably over the next 3 months. I can only speculate what this will look like in the 3d realm. However, I assure you it will be profound on many levels of awareness.

On a personal level, focusing on what you can change internally/externally to evoke a healthier perspective and lifestyle represents one effective strategy. There are others each with their own version of creating change.

To further underscore this polarity, polls released this week show President Obama's approval rating around 50%. Half approve of his performance; half don't. This push/pull of polarity and change is far from over. It continues through 2014 as Uranus creates 7 strong squares with Pluto in Capricorn (future blog).

Other significant aspects for this New Moon vibe includes the relationship between Mars (ever so slowly moving again) in Leo (1) with Pluto in Capricorn (2) and Mercury in Taurus (3) (getting ready to retrograde on the 17th).

This on-going dialogue between Mars and Pluto about how to live from one's heart passion and desires (Leo) in a new, empowered structure (Capricorn), now includes in the conversation the practical aspects of Mercury in Taurus. Retrograde Mercury comes to a direct square with Mars on April 25th at 10 degrees Taurus/Leo. This creates the necessary critical tension to ground or anchor in how you wish to express and create with your innate gifts going forward.

Night Sky - Venus continues to brighten in the early evening western sky. Amber Mars is fading as we move farther from it. On the 21st, it appears next to the waxing Moon. Meanwhile, brilliant Jupiter shines in the early morning eastern sky reminding us change is in the air.

Our plans for this Spring/Summer: Kathryn and I travel to Japan soon to co-teach and offer private sessions in bodywork and astrology. Beyond Japan, our plans for the summer continue to shift and change in amazing ways. On our radar are trips to the East Coast, United States in May/June, including New York and Philadelphia and a healing retreat; Denver in August for a major healing retreat, and possibly a visit to Asheville North Carolina somewhere in-between.

As astrologers we recognize the potent transformational cycles at play, especially how they now activate our personal natal charts (they are intense!). Yet, recognizing and surfing these waves of change are two very different realities. The conscious leaps of faith we now take through our travels are designed to strengthen our connection both internally and externally in our gift of service to the world.

Uranus Flash!!! Do the planetary patterns inspire spontaneous travel plans in your near future? Here on Big Island Hawaii, swim/connect with wild spinner dolphin pods in nearby bays, visit sacred sites, tour Volcanoes National Park. We are subletting this summer our home in South Kona, Honaunau Hawaii for one or two months (August/September). We live on 4 acres filled with tropical fruit trees overlooking the Pacific and Kealakekua Bay.  Contact us if you'd like to experience first-hand the power of Big Island.
