Nothing is softer or more flexible than water, yet nothing can resist it.
Lao Tzu, Father of Taoism
The other day I was flying to Hawaii after 3 weeks in Japan. Below me wrapped in darkness was the mighty Pacific, an immense body of water beyond comprehension; its liquid power holding tremendous sway over the weather systems sweeping planet Earth. Above this massive water engine brilliant star fields filled the night sky.
Scorpio and Sagittarius framed my window, standing upright in the south...starry sentinels pointing to Galactic Center...the engine fueling our galaxy's movement. As above...so below. In that moment I realized these enormous energy fields, both close and afar, set the tone and direction of our day to day human choices and experiences while barely registering on our human perception radar. Fortunately, Astrology, as a cosmic weather report, helps us understand and correlate these universal movements and cycles into form so we can make sense or anticipate the ebb and flow of energy of what lies before us.
At this New Moon lunation, a changing of the energetic guard begins to take place. The
strong, refreshing Gemini breath of May and early June now winds down, while the watery Cancer energy of the coming months begins to build. Yes, this is a Gemini New Moon, seemingly filled with air, play, lightness and discovery. Yet, behind this form lies strong currents fueled by water, pointing to a new season filled with emotional intensity and strong challenges.
Water events have been prominent in the news lately. Europe has seen record flooding, extreme weather in the south central United States has brought intense tornadoes and record rainfall. And now the East Coast US is seeing flooding from the first tropical storm of the season. Yes, at this Gemini New Moon, the "season of water" has arrived.
Water correlates with emotions. Fluid, shifting, sensitive, intuitive/empathic, dream inducing and mystifying are its common characteristics. At this New Moon, the watery participants on the cosmic stage are Venus and Mercury in Cancer, Saturn in Scorpio and Neptune and Chiron in Pisces (more below). These and other planetary positions at this New Moon offer compelling clues about what to expect in June and July 2013.
Here's the New Moon chart:
Sun/Moon positioned at 18° Gemini on June 8 at 5:56 AM, Hawaiian Standard Time, 8:56 AM PDT, 11:56 AM EDT, 3:56 PM GMT, and on June 9th shortly after midnight from Japan east to the International Date Line.
Significant influences at play at this Gemini New Moon:
Fleet winged Mercury, ruler of Gemini, positioned at 12° Cancer, brings its Gemini's qualities of movement, ideas, and networking into the Cancer quest for self nurturing care, a unified family and a healthy and abundant community.
One day later, Mercury transits 13° Cancer. This position marks the sounding bell for the coming Mercury Retrograde beginning June 26 and ending July 20th. As the 2nd of 3 water based Mercury Retrogrades for 2013, the focus now quickly shifts to water's emotional influence in our lives and all things Cancer. Also, this retrograde period signals a much slower than usual Mercury transit through the sign of Cancer adding additional Gemini fuel to this Cancer quest for a more nurturing reality. Good preparatory questions to ask at the outset of this New Moon cycle:
- Do my quality of life choices and circumstances match my evolving dreams/vision for myself, my family and community? If not, what am I willing to change to create greater congruency?
- What am I prepared to initiate with others (good Gemini New Moon thrust) to further this evolving energy in a more holistic and self-sustaining fashion.
Expansive Jupiter figures prominently in this New Moon chart. At 25° Gemini, it now nears the end of its one year transit through the sign of the twins, further amplifying its optimistic influence while offering a broader and more encouraging perspective of what is possible in our lives. Nonetheless, a strong water influence at this New Moon has also something to add to this conversation thanks to the intensity of...
- an emerging Grand Water Trine. This geometry pictured on the left occurs whenever 3 or more planetary energies align in the 3 water signs to form a 120° relationship (trine) to each other. It is a potent energy form, but requires direct action in order to manifest its potential. This grand trine emerged last week when Mercury and Venus moved into Cancer creating an energetic connection with Saturn in Scorpio and Neptune in Pisces.
Each member of the grand trine carries its own intention:
- Venus points to a more holistic relationship with our environment while nearby Mercury communicates those values to our communities.
- Saturn in Scorpio asks you to be realistic about your limits, and responsible for your use and stewardship of the Earth's resources.
- Neptune in Pisces draws you to a heightened spiritual vibration with others across the globe. Its absorbing influence dissolves form and boundaries while encouraging dreams, music and empathic connection with nature.
Yet this trine combination requires some additional fuel to fully activate its potential. And what better cosmic players to do so than...
- unpredictable Uranus and transformative Pluto. Forming a square/opposition dynamic with Venus and Mercury at this New Moon, this duo adds its rebellious, controlling dichotomy to this watery energetic soup. One visual that comes to mind is a container of still water suddenly brought to life by the flick of a blender switch. This life-changing intensity becomes the driving force behind the grand trine's water vibration for radically changing the energetic landscape and direction of human behavior in the coming months. Yet, waiting in the wings to really get things going is...
- expansive Jupiter. On June 25th, this potent energy form enters the sign of Cancer where it remains for a year. Here, Jupiter becomes the newest member of the grand water trine with Saturn and Neptune, maintaining that trine connection through mid August while forming an intense connection with Uranus and Pluto. And if that combo weren't enough, there's...
- Mars at 5° Gemini at this New Moon creating a square with Neptune in Pisces. This action, oriented warrior reminds us in true Gemini fashion to "expect nothing, and be prepared for anything" in the coming months. It's relationship to Neptune underscores how water will be the driving medium through which substantive change occurs throughout the remainder of 2013.
Anyone with significant planetary natal aspects in the 8 - 12° range of the Cardinal signs of Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn will experience significant changes and new beginnings in the coming months.
To recap this emerging Cancer surge over the next 35 days:
- June 9th, Mercury enters its retrograde shadow at 13° Cancer.
- June 20/21, the Solstice arrives with the Sun entering the sign of Cancer
- June 23rd marks the Capricorn Full Moon, and incidentally the closest Full Moon of 2013. As the most significant lunation of 2013, this "super full moon" will command our attention, directing its spotlight to the opposite sign of Cancer.
- Jupiter enters Cancer on the 25th
- Mercury moves retrograde at 23° Cancer on the 26th
- Mars now in Gemini moves into Cancer on July 13
All in all... a monumental cascade or deluge of Cancer like water energy over the next month.
Conclusion: Any New Moon give us a taste of what to expect in the evolving mythos. This lunation in particular is quite clear about the profound water influences emerging in the coming days. Since 2010, I have maintained 2013 and 2014 are much more significant astrologically than the energies of 2011 and 2012. This Gemini New Moon and the coming Capricorn Full Moon of June 23rd reinforce that notion.
My recent travels in Japan remind me our societal relationships across nations are becoming closer, more intimate, and collectively energizing. This bonding transcends national boundaries and cultural beliefs. People feel this unpredictable, changing vibe around the world. It's palpable. The current instantaneous global exchange of ideas and possibilities amongst people from all walks of life is unprecedented and far reaching. Yet, in true Neptunian fashion, its ultimate direction remains unclear.
What will evolve from this emerging watery soup of inter-connection? Will it be the grace of passion and courage to strongly shift the human conversation to a more holistic viewpoint, or a continuation of fear based driven needs for stability and the status quo of the past? Only time will tell. Our mission according to this Gemini New Moon script is to stay emotionally present, remain connected and co-creative in our communities, and effect change as the moment presents itself. "...grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."
