Solstice 2010: The Cardinal Climax

"If we don't change direction soon, we'll end up where we're going."
"Professor" Irwin Corey, American Vaudeville comic and actor

"We fear only what we haven't understood." Byron Katie, Spiritual Author

"We live in a moment of history where change is so speeded up that we begin to see the present only when it is already disappearing." R.D. Laing, Psychiatrist

Solstice 2010 and the 2010 Turning Point

The Solstice arrives on June 21, 2010 as the Sun enters the Cardinal sign of Cancer. In Hawaii, Solstice is at 1:28 am; 4:28 am on the Pacific Coast; 11:28 am Greenwich Mean Time (GMT); and 8:28 pm in Japan.

In the northern hemisphere, the June solstice is the longest day of the year, marking the first day of Summer. This rich, abundant season expresses the ripeness and fullness of life. Let your light shine! In the "as above, so below" mysteries, this maximum expression of solar radiance may be seen as a symbol for celebrating your external physical creations here on Earth.

At the Solstice this year, astrological patterns line up near the early degrees of all the Cardinal Signs. These zodiac signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) are the initiators for each season of the year. They are the 4 cornerstones, or foundational points of life. Aries focuses on creativity and new initiatives; Cancer feeds the realm of community/family; Libra frames our relationships; and Capricorn establishes our rules, organization and structures of life.

This day serves as the sounding bell for the unfolding of events over the next four years. Its dominant Cardinal sign energy reminds us to create something new. The energetic ethers are super ripe now with inspiration and new insights. Some Astrologers refer to this energy the "Cardinal Climax", or as we say the "2010 Turning Point" - a symbolic arrival at the "crossroads" in our personal lives, and as a collective for humanity.

Here's the chart for the Solstice - notice the "cross" created by the dominant planetary energies resident in the chart:

The planetary archetype members of these Cardinal Positions are:

Uranus and Jupiter in Aries (1) - activation and expansion of individuation, self expression and increased access to new information. Impulsive spontaneity (a wonderful Aries trait) is encouraged. As Uranus energy governs the Cosmos, expansive Jupiter ensures new revelations will pour forth over the next year in matters of Universal awareness and understanding.

Sun in Cancer (2) - shining light in your community, home, and family life. From Solstice through the end of June, Sun fuels the fires of the Cardinal Climax. This brilliant light reminds us of the importance of creating a nurturing world based on cooperation, connection and quality of life choices. In opposition to Pluto, structures not serving that higher intention will eventually fail, or be transformed.

Saturn at Solstice is at the end degrees of Virgo (3), soon to enter Libra on July 21st. Fine tune details (Virgo trait), and get a reality check for restructuring your various relationships in the coming months.

Pluto in Capricorn (4) - Pluto entered Capricorn in January 2008. At early degrees Capricorn, Pluto is activated and energized by the Sun's radiant energy any time there is a Solstice or Equinox. Pluto, ruler of Scorpio, is the "transformer", going beyond the form. This continues through 2011.

In Capricorn, Pluto has been a catalyst for dissolving forms of business, government, laws, rules, regulations and all matters of finance. This dynamic continues through 2023.

With the exception of the Sun, the other three Cardinal points are activated by very slow moving planetary aspects. That this multiple combination occurs at the same period of time portends dramatic shifts and changes on a global scale over the coming 4 years. Note: any combination here (Uranus/Jupiter square Pluto, Saturn oppose Uranus/Jupiter, Saturn square Pluto) is a significant planetary cycle. Put them together in the same melting pot and "the sky's the limit" for change possibilities/scenarios, and new found opportunities.

Certainly, these cycles contain the capacity for destruction, mayhem, and social unrest. Over the past year, these building tendencies have been evident in many parts of the world. However, we now experience these cycles having access to effective wellness strategies, networking abilities, and creative tools unlike any generation preceding us. And therein lies the silver lining in this turbulent sea.

How we consciously choose to work with this shifiting energy will define our place in history. Will we choose new life based on wholeness, wellness and quality of life initiatives through courage and heart-felt determination, or move towards preserving the status quo in hopes the current energetic storm will subside?  Consider this duality and how each side of the equation energetically feels:

Each new season of your life is a time for creative beginnings, especially for renewing your commitment to yourself, your personal relationships, community and family, Planet Earth, and to Spirit. The time is ripe to release, restructure and renew those areas of your life no longer serving you. Also, Summer 2010 is a critical time of conscious choice and turning a corner. Contemplate, and then "take action" through your manifestations.

Beyond the Solstice and over the course of the new season through the end of July, there is no "break" from the intensity and creative impulses sweeping the planet. Any day's particular astrological energetics is full of life changing challenges, opportunities and shifts. Yet, some days are more potent than others. Here's a list of those more energized days:

June 26th - Eclipsed Lunar Full Moon in Capricorn
1:30 am Hawaiian Time, 4:30 am PDT, 11:30 am GMT

Eclipses are invitations to explore the shadow side of life. This particular one is a partial lunar eclipse, i.e. the Moon dips about halfway into the Earth's shadow. Best visibility for the entire eclipse is the Pacific Rim. North America sees stages of the eclipse up until Moon set. The farther west, the better. Moon moving through the Earth's Umbra shadow looks like this:

Astrologically, 3 potent aspects create a T-square on the Cardinal points, continuing the Solstice vibration. This includes Moon and Pluto in Capricorn at 4 degrees (1) opposite the Sun and Mercury in Cancer (2), both in square to Uranus/Jupiter in Aries (3). Here's the chart:

The one compelling feature of this chart is the emotional experience from dissolving old structures/forms. For anyone with significant planetary aspects in early degree Cardinal signs, this theme is particularly strong for you, and possibly mirrors events occurring last November to early April, when Saturn was in early degrees of Libra. Issues involving intimate relationships in your life find firm ground for resolution, regeneration or transformation in the coming months, especially starting in September. By then, Saturn will have moved away from Pluto and the intensity of the 2010 Turning Point.

July 3/4 Moon in Aries conjunct Jupiter/Uranus, and square Pluto - a potent day for spontaneous, innovative creations feeding your emotional state. Enjoy expressive arts and creativity.

July 11th Total Solar Eclipse - New Moon at 19 Cancer - a major solar eclipse today sweeps across the South Pacific. New Moon time is 9:40 am HST, 12:40 pm PDT, 7:40 pm GMT, July 12th from India east to the International Date Line. This is a rather long eclipse with greatest totality approximating 5 minutes and 20 seconds. Have a look here for a helpful animation of the eclipse track, courtesy of the Shadow and Substance web site. Most of this eclipse occurs over the Southern Pacific Ocean, far from land until it reaches the South American continent near sunset.

This eclipse series began on September 19, 1541 at 6 Libra. So it's "saros theme" focuses on relationships. It ends in December, 2893 at 8 Capricorn. This cycle embodies strong Cardinal sign intentions about restructuring relationship.

The current version (see chart above) has Sun/Moon at 19 Cancer (1) in sextile to Mars in Virgo at 19 degrees (2). Sextiles are strong, productive energy forms. Here, Mars encourages us to pay attention to the details (Virgo) when taking action (Mars) in areas of your life affected by wellness, self-care and nurturing stewardship of the Planet. As such, this eclipse points the spotlight (similar to the Solstice theme) on upgrading your quality of life direction and related choices.

July 21st - Saturn returns to Libra until October 2012 - The cardinal sign of Libra includes the realm of partnership, how others see/experience you, diplomacy, peaceful co-existence, and creation of art and beauty. It is ruled by Venus. While Saturn travels through early degrees of Libra, it activates a number of cardinal planetary cycles. On this day, co-create, play, pray, meditate.

July 26th - Saturn opposes Uranus/Jupiter (5th of 5 passes) This topic has been discussed in detail by many astrologers and in our previous blog here. This day concludes a 2 year activation of a 45 year cycle. It began in November, 2008 with the Election of US President Barack Obama. Since then, struggles between the desire for change versus the need for stability have taken center stage in the political and social realms of many countries.

Today is definitely a day to be inward. Use the time to reflect upon changes in your life over the past two years. Integrate these energies through bodywork or massage therapies.

July 29th - Mars conjoins Saturn - the new warrior meets the old warrior. Power plays on the world stage may become more evident and intense, as the quest for change and new initiative vs stability reaches fever pitch. While Saturn is often seen as "laying down the law" or the protective, providing parent, motivated Mars finds instinctive ways to leap before looking. In the sign of Libra, these two archetypes of energy pose the question "what are you committed to in your relationships?"

July 31 - Moon conjoins Uranus/Jupiter in Aries, opposite Saturn/Mars in Libra, square to Pluto in Capricorn. The fever just moved up the scale 10 notches. Emotions may run hot and high today. Remember to create clear and healthy boundaries with others when addressing individuated needs. Impulsive action may be met with resistance and heaviness. A good day to "be quiet" and reflect.

In a future blog, we'll cover the astrological timings for August and September. Suffice it to say, whatever unfolds in late June and July will be very strong indicators for how the remainder of the Summer months play out.

In our personal journey, this summer we celebrate 10 years together in relationship and in healing service on Big Island, Hawaii. We'll celebrate with friends on Big Island July 24. In June we travel to the East Coast to visit family and friends in Philadelphia and New York. There, we are offering a multi-media Astrology Presentation on Long Island, July 10th, plus Private Tandem Bodywork sessions in the Philadelphia area (Kimberton) and Long Island.

Then, in August, we're off to Colorado to participate in a life-changing healing retreat called "Ultimatum". While in Colorado, we are offering Astrology Presentations on the Cardinal Climax, and co-teach a Voyager Tarot Inner Journey Workshop in the Denver area.

As we surf this sea of great uncertainty, we recognize the value of making a commitment to our personal health and well being. Our journey this summer, personally and professionally, is a leap of faith to expand our sentient and intuitive channels, while strengthening our physical bodies. May the information we have presented here support you in creating conscious intentions and inspired action for the "2010 Turning Point".

Next Blog - Mid Summer review and checkup coming in late July.

Happy Solstice!!!

  1. Hello, thank you for your enlightening view on this Solar Solstice and Cardinal Climax.

I love your blog, but I have a little technical problem with it. It seems that when ever I try to scroll through your blog, it is terribly slow and takes forever to go forward in the written text and read more when it takes so long. I don't have this with any other site. I just wanted you to know, that maybe there are some settings on the site that makes it hard to scroll or something?

What ever it is, have a amazing summer and all the best for you and I will stay tuned for more of your amazing thoughts on astrology. <3
